How To Install Aurorae Themes

Requirements:

  • KDE 4.x installed on any Linux operating system (Does not work with Microsoft Windows)

Installing with KDE System Settings (since KDE 4.4):

  • Open your KDE System Settings and click on "Appearance".
  • To the left of the Appearance dialog, click "Windows".
  • From the dropdown box, choose "Aurorae Theme Engine" (see image).

  • Once you've done that, click the button underneath labeled "Get New Themes" to bring up the built-in installer called GetHotNewStuff (GHNS).

This allows you to install and uninstall many Aurorae themes available on KDE-Look.org. You can sort by Newest, Most Downloaded, Highest Rated, or you can type a search term into the box. Simply select the theme and click "Install" to the right. You're done!

If you have downloaded the package manually, you can also install from this dialog by clicking "Install New Theme" (next to "Get New Themes") and choose the theme archive you have downloaded (yourtheme.tar.gz).

Manual Install (pre KDE 4.4):

First you must ensure you have Aurorae Theme Manager installed. If it is not listed under "System Settings > Appearance > Windows" (see image) then you must install it in order to use Aurorae themes. For more information please see Aurorae Theme Engine project page.

At this point, you should be able to select "Install New Theme" and choose the archive you have downloaded (yourtheme.tar.gz). You're done!

For a true manual install, extract the files and copy the folder to ~/.kde/share/apps/aurorae/themes . For example if you are installing "Tragedy Deco", you should have a folder inside of the "themes" folder named "tragedy-deco" with all of the theme components inside. You may need to close and re-open the System Settings dialog before it shows up in the list
